Our Approach

Our starting point for therapy is a collaborative process to understand what is currently happening in your life and what has brought you to therapy. In addition to gaining insight into your current circumstances, this will usually involve exploring your experience of significant past and present relationships, and of any specific experiences which have shaped your personality, your sense of self, and your relational life. We will engage with you to develop a therapeutic program that takes account of your strengths and capabilities, and use our clinical experience and expertise to optimise your psychological and emotional wellbeing. We focus on building resilience in the long term so that relapse is unlikely.

Our clinical psychologists are trained in a wide range of psychological therapies and will create from these a tailored program designed to address your particular goals and needs. In designing a program they will take account of your particular presenting issue, your life-stage and your identified goals for therapy. We have training and experience in a wide range of therapeutic approaches including psychodynamic and relational approaches, cognitive behaviour therapies (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness therapy and practice, experiential techniques, family and couples counselling, and a host of others. Further details on the expertise and experience of our therapists is contained in their individual profiles on this website.

We believe therapy is a way not only to change your symptoms but to grow within yourself and to foster your relationships to build a better life. This can be challenging and involves a strong, collaborative relationship with your Psychologist. At South Melbourne Psychology we work on understanding the unique qualities of our clients, their relationships and life choices, and in establishing a strong and safe alliance to support the therapeutic process.
